I've moved from playing bass/recording in traditional NY studios to making EDM at a home studio... it's interesting seeing it from both sides of the fence. Adapting with the changing environment will only help anyone in this business. Arrangment, sound choices, mix...all of that is done simultaneously then given straight to the fans and clubgoers. It's organic and it just happened naturally in the culture.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05801494181979814569noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5913752433926766420.post-1702194497011789082013-06-10T08:25:51.319-07:002013-06-10T08:25:51.319-07:00Great article with lots of very valid points. As I understand, it comes down to the 6 points below:
1. people who compose EDM are technically competent with DAWs synths and effects in a way that traditional musicians and singers are not.
2. A lot of EDM revolves around the sounds of the synths and creating the synth sounds you want requires much of the same skill set as mixers and masterers
3. Mastering and outside mixing is expensive - maybe this is important for radio, but will it make the track more 'danceable' when it's demo'd by a friendly DJ over a club system?
4. EDM must get the sub-bass right - this is integral to the sound and not an after-thought. This means EDM producers must have the equipment and ears to check out and design the sub-bass in detail.
5. EDM utilizes a fix-it-in-the-arrangement-and-sound-source approach. if it's not sounding right - change the arrangement or sound source - this is easy to do and more effective than trying to fix-it-in-the-mix. This decreases the importance of mixing and mastering.
6. Technology is better and cheaper than before.
I think most of these are reflected in your article above - what do you think?Jacnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5913752433926766420.post-53255762633117688852013-06-06T12:25:49.406-07:002013-06-06T12:25:49.406-07:00It's funny, it seems as though people consider...It's funny, it seems as though people consider mastering as "slamming a mix and using exciters"

Mastering is a philosophy. It's objectivity. And you can't fit that into a plug-in.

Dihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09993358212442821526noreply@blogger.com
