The mix was solid, with enough dynamics to compress –if desired- in a mastering environment.

I must say that this particular buss compressor (SSL plug-in that you show) is gentle enough to use it without been detected, is one of my favorites.Juannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5913752433926766420.post-35091682266986116012011-09-09T12:49:13.422-07:002011-09-09T12:49:13.422-07:00A great book. And it doesn't just apply to the superb T-Racks 3 plug ins either.
It makes more sense every time I reread it. Glad Mrs. Santa got it for me!Steve-a-reenonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5913752433926766420.post-72672961955107229482011-09-09T08:01:54.292-07:002011-09-09T08:01:54.292-07:00Bobby, this is awesome advice! I've translated...Bobby, this is awesome advice! I've translated your idea to FoH applications as well. One difference is there won't be "mastering" between mixing and listening, so I lean a little toward the "client mix" chain with a 3-band compressor and some overall eq. Here's what it looks like:

I start with your "At the Beginning" option. The console is patched with a parametric-eq/compressor/downward-expander/gate per channel; parametric-eq/compressor on the main buss; and a 3-band compressor and 31-band eq inserted across the main buss. (No outboard gear involved - I love my digital mixing console!) The amps and speakers have hard limiter protection to save the bank account from moments of stupidity. Adjusting the redlines on the main buss output and the amplifier inputs to match means the hard limiters really do just catch the rare stupid stuff.

Thankfully the built-in compressors are ok, since I can't "insert a different one" without buying outboard gear (it's not *that* fancy of a console - $10K not $100K). So I don't find much of a downside to the "At the Beginning" option; and it gets me some of that glue and bigness that people are used to hearing.

Thanks for all your writings. Hope to hear you on the AudioNowCast again soon :)

--
Andrewwabaushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02255740822944104813noreply@blogger.com
