7 Drum Replacement Tricks

Sometimes replacing or augmenting recorded drums with new sounds is necessary during a mix. You might want the drums to sound bigger or just need something that fits better in the track. Here are 7 drum replacement tricks from the latest edition of The Mixing Engineer's Handbook (the 3rd) that will help your samples really sing.

"There are many techniques when it comes to sound replacement or enhancement. While most refer to drums, it’s possible to use some of the same techniques in other situations as well if you’re willing to experiment.

1. If the original drum sounds okay soloed but disappears in the track, select a sample with high initial transient. If the original tone of the drum doesn’t fit the song, select a sample based on the character of the body of the sound after the initial hit.

2. Timing is extremely important when adding a sample to the original sound, so care should be taken so that both transients line up together. Many sound replacement plugins have some latency, so be sure to check this closely and move the sample as necessary.

3. It’s critical that you check the phase alignment of the sample against the original drum. Even though it may look to be in-phase, your ears may tell you something completely different when the Phase button is selected.

4. Snare drum is the hardest to augment/replace because of the nuances in how hard and how frequently the drummer hits it. Be sure to use a multi-sampled snare drum with multiple level variations in order to keep it sounding like it was played by a real drummer.

5. If you don’t have a multi-sampled snare or the sound doesn’t have enough sample levels, you can make your own by duplicating the sample a few times and raising and lowering each one by 2 cents. 

6. Slightly changing the pitch of the sample gives the impression that the snare is hit a bit louder or softer.

7. You can make your own samples especially for the song by taking the best sounding hits from the recording of the kit your mixing and triggering them as needed.

Hand Crafting A Steinway Piano

One of the most revered names in the piano business, actually the entire music business, is Steinway. The company may be in for a big change in the near future as private equity firm Kohlberg & Company is on the verge of buying them, which will take the company private again (its stock hovers around $36 right now).

One of the fears is that the new owners will change the manufacturing, which is decidedly still old school in that each piano is uniquely hand-crafted and takes 11 months to build. That's why they all have their own character, but as we've seen with guitars and other instruments, as soon as modern manufacturing enters the picture, a lot of that individual character goes away.

The Accident That Changed Modern Guitar Sound

Distortion and the guitar go together like peanut butter and jelly, but did you ever wonder how the combination came about? Believe it or not, the sound that everyone loves was a product of a country music session in Nashville in 1960.

According to an article in The Tennessean by Peter Cooper, the first recorded distorted guitar came about as an accident when the 3 channel console malfunctioned during a Marty Robbins session for the song "Don't Worry." According to the engineer of the session, Glen Snoddy, the transformer on one of the console's mic preamps failed, causing it to distort, but everyone loved the sound.

The song went on to be #1 on the country charts and #3 on the pop charts and suddenly everyone was coming to the studio (Owen Bradley's famous Quonset Hut Studio) looking to replicate the sound. The only problem was that the channel with the lovely distortion had by that time failed completely, which caused Snoddy to hastily build a pedal that replicated the sound.

Now keep in mind that this was the very first guitar pedal!

Snoddy then offered the pedal to Gibson, who issued it as the Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone in 1962. The problem was that it didn't catch on. In fact, it was only when The Stones' Keith Richards used the pedal on the world-wide hit "Satisfaction" that the world finally appreciated the wonders of the distortion pedal, and sales took off.

Snoddy collected royalties for 7 years on his creation, but continued to engineer and recorded hits for Loretta Lynn, Jimmy Buffett, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Johnny Cash ("Ring of Fire"). He's 91 and retired now, but hopefully people will remember him as the architect of the modern distorted guitar and the guitar pedal.

New Music Gear Monday: Apogee One iOS Interface

We're now starting to see the capabilities of the iPad expanding with not only a host of music related software, but hardware as well. Interface hardware was the missing link until recently, when a number of company released purpose-built I/O with the iPad in mind. Apogee has been especially active on this front, creating the second generation of the neat little Apogee One specifically for use with the iPad.

One is an Apple certified USB I/O device for iPad and the Mac, meaning that you can have confidence that it will work with no glitches. It has two high-quality mic amps, and Apogee's famous convertors that will work at resolutions up 96kHz/24. It also has a built-in mic for those quick setups where you just want to get something down before you forget it. Plus, it can also be battery powered so you can be recording completely off the grid. The price is around $349.

Jimi Hendrix "Fire" Isolated Guitar Track

When it comes to modern rock guitar players no one is more revered than Jimi Hendrix. Here's an inside look at his playing on one of the most popular songs from his first Are You Experienced album - "Fire." In this isolated track, you'll hear Jimi's guitars like you've never heard them before.

Here are some things to listen for.

1. Jimi was a great rhythm player and you can hear him push along the groove of the track really well here with the lower mellow guitar part.

2. There are a lot more guitars on this track than what seems apparent on the record. In fact, there's usually at least 2 and sometimes as many as 4. When there's 2 playing, Jimi keeps them separated by having one playing in a higher register while the other is in a lower register.

3. Listen to the double on the guitar solo at 1:23, but also check out the rhythm guitar underneath.

4. The reverb on the guitar sounds very much like a spring reverb.

5. Play it all the way to the end to hear the ending that's not on the record.

How About Headphone Implants?

Ear Magnet Implants imageMany of us have a love/hate relationship with headphones when we use them. Earbuds usually don't sound that great and they tend to pop out at the most inopportune times. Full over-the-ear headphones sound a lot better, but are bulky and difficult to wear for long periods of time. Has the time come for surgically implanted earphones?

Rich Lee actually had magnet implants in the tragus of his ears that work like headphones, so he has none of these problems. He never mentions what they actually sound like in the video though.

The crazy thing is that he says you can actually buy a kit on ebay to do this, although I couldn't find one. Check out his explanation.

Most songwriters take their lyrics very seriously, so it's painful when a listener hears them differently from the way they're written. Spotify recently came out with a list of their top 10 misquoted song lyrics after a fan survey. Here they are:

1. Manfred Mann's "Blinded By The Light" - 56%
What they hear: "Blinded by the light..wrapped up like a douche when you're rollin in the night."
The real lyric: "Blinded by the light.....revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night."

2. Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" - 19%

2 Tips For Bigger Sounding Background Vocals

It doesn't take much to make background vocals sound a lot bigger that just doing a double. Here's a couple of tricks from The Music Producer's Handbook to give those BGs the big sound they deserve.

"An offshoot to doubling is vocal stacking, a technique normally used on harmony background vocals. Like doubling, stacking can make a harmony vocal part sound stronger while smoothing out any tuning inconsistencies.

An example of vocal stacking would be a three piece vocal group singing a three part harmony part. After their first pass is complete, they’d double the exact parts singing it exactly the same way, then even triple track it or more, all in an effort to get a bigger fuller sound. One little trick that makes a stack sound bigger is to have the vocalists take a step back from the mic with every vocal pass while the engineer increases the mic gain to compensate for the distance. The increased ambience of the room will naturally enhance the sound without artificial means.

Another trick would be to have the vocalists change parts with every pass. In other words, the vocalist on the highest part of the 3 part harmony would move to the lowest, the one on the mid part would move to the highest, and the low part would move to the mid part. Of course, this assumes that the vocalists are pros and capable of changing vocal parts without too much of a problem, and that their voices are actually capable of performing the new parts."

Joe Walsh and Don Felder are two of the most lyrical guitar players going, opting more for a beautiful melodic riff rather than some show-off flash. Here's the isolated guitar solo tracks from The Eagle's most famous track "Hotel California," that shows just how great these two guitar greats are. Listen for:

The Acoustic Window Innovation

Modern recording studios are much different from the studios of the 60s and 70s. Today, we love to have lots of natural light, which means lots of windows. While glass is a decent insulator, it's pretty reflective, which causes a whole new set of problems, since the best studios closely control those reflections with absorption. That's especially true in the area around the mixer, and it's why we create what's known as a reflection-free zone in that area. But a new kind of acoustic window created by South Korean researchers promises to change all that.

The diffraction resonator window increases the isolation of a common double pane glass window by 30dB at frequencies between 200Hz to 5kHz, and 20dB below that. It even allows air inside while keeping sound out. The window is made from an interesting mesh of metamaterials designed as tiny Hemholtz resonators (bass traps).

At first glance it might seem that the increased isolation of the diffraction resonator window is what's acoustically attractive, which it is. But the other part that's really cool about it is that you can now have lots of glass in the studio and not have to worry about its reflective properties the way you do with normal glass, since it's absorbing those reflections while leaving light, and even air, in.

There's no word on when the diffraction resonator window will hit the market, but they're supposedly fairly simple to manufacture. That means that we may soon see lots of natural light in future studios everywhere.

Mixing Tips From Gaga's Mixer

I love the way Lady Gaga is mixed and I was lucky enough to interview her excellent mixer, Robert Orton, for the 3rd edition of The Mixing Engineer's Handbook, which was recently released. Here's a brief excerpt, where he talks about mixing in the box and his approach to EQ.


"If you’ve enjoyed the big hits from Lady Gaga’s “The Fame” and “The Fame Monster” albums like “Poker Face,” “Paparazzi,” and “Just Dance,” then Robert Orton is your man. After spending eight years at the side of producer extraordinaire Trevor Horn, Robert has gone on to craft hits for Robbie Williams, Enrique Iglesias, Carly Rae Jepsen, Flo Rida, Kelis, Usher, Mary J Blige, and Marilyn Manson, among many others, while winning a few Grammy awards for his work along the way. Robert is also one of the first hit makers influenced by earlier versions of this book. Says Robert, “The Mixing Engineer's Handbook is one that I remember studying very closely when I was an aspiring mixer hoping to catch a break.”

Are you mixing mostly in the box or on a console?
I’m mostly in the box in Pro Tools with a load of plugins. I’ve got a few bits of outboard gear as well, mainly a bit of compression like some [Empirical Labs EL-8] Distressors, because there’s not much that sounds like them. Sometimes you just need a bit of analog to find the sound you’re looking for, but for the most part I’m in the box. I guess I’ve always really mixed that way. I like the way it sounds and it’s so much more convenient when it comes to recalls.

Are you using an analog mix buss?
No, I’ve tried those kind of things and I haven’t felt that I’ve gained a lot from using them. Basically I mix in the box and then I’ve got a couple of things that might go over the mix, but I don’t buss it out or stem it out or anything like that.

Do you use a controller?

No, I just use a trackball. The few times when I mixed on an [Avid] Icon or that sort of thing in the past I’ve found that I ignored it most of the time. I’m so used to doing rides on the trackball that I forget that the controller’s there. I have a really simple little setup. I just sit in front of a pair of monitors with a computer in a well treated room. 

What’s your approach when you have a song that uses a synth instead a bass guitar for the bottom end?
I think you have to approach it slightly differently because quite often those type of synth sounds interact with other parts of the song. Maybe the top end of it is buzzy or something like that, and it’s not always just the traditional low end that you’re looking for from some of those parts. Sometimes I approach that by maybe multing it out so I’ve got the bottom end from it [on one channel], but treat it in parallel and then blend the sounds together. 

I’ve noticed that in those kinds of songs you’ve made the kick a little bigger than it might normally be as well so it takes up a lot of those frequencies as well.
I tend to mix the kick drum quite loud in that style of music. I know that’s a bit of a trend at the moment as well but I like to hear it thump you in the chest. Sometimes I’ll use a trick like compressing the bass every time the kick hits so you don’t need to balance the kick as loud for it to have impact. 

So you’re keying it then?

Sometimes. That’s certainly a good trick when you have a dense bass synth that’s taking up a lot of space. Sometimes that kind of trick can open up space in the mix if done subtly enough.

Do you have a particular approach to using EQ?
I use a number of approaches actually. Sometimes I’ll hear a frequency that I don’t like, then I’ll use some subtraction. Other times I might think, “This just needs to be brighter,” and I’ll just turn the knobs until it sounds right. I don’t think too much about the frequencies and I’m definitely not afraid to boost a lot. 


Having said that, I don’t just go in and EQ everything. I think the best advice I could give anyone who wants to mix is to learn when not to process something. The more you process things, the worse it sounds, I generally find. To me mixing is more about balance and groove and getting that to happen. I always try to get the mix to sound as good as I can just with the balance before I go in and start EQing. I might fix something at the beginning of a mix if it feels wrong to me, but I don’t just jump right in and EQ things. I think that leads to more of a mess than anything."
